Research line: Antennas and microwave circuits

Specific competencies: The research work in this line will be characterized by the use of methods and concepts related to Electromagnetism applied to problems in RF and microwave communication systems. Throughout their training as researchers, the students must develop their own computer applications (in programming environments such as "Matlab", "Fortran" or "Python") and will have to learn to use commercial electromagnetic simulation tools. Also, students will become familiar with the circuits and antennas manufacture laboratory available in the Microwave Group, and with the required measurement instrumentation for such circuits and antennas. Students participating in this research will aim at providing original ideas in the design of passive circuits and microwave antennas, being able to translate these ideas in the form of patents or publications in prestigious international journals (such as IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques or IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation). Students must develop the ability to present in public the results in specialized conferences, both nationally and internationally.

Training activities: the basic training activity is the continuous interaction between the student and its director or directors, completed in the writing and defense of the doctoral thesis. Also, regular meetings are held for students and teachers of the research line for the delivery of seminars by teachers and the presentation and discussion of student work. The training is complemented with the assistance, as a lecturer and as a listener, to international congresses related to the research line, as well as conferences and courses given by renowned researchers within the framework of the doctoral program.

Coordination activities: regular meetings of the teaching staff of the research line to organize research activity of the students working in this research line, as well as to monitor the individual evolution. They will also establish and updated the objectives of the research line.

Evaluation and rating systems: evaluation and rating will be made through the public defense of the Doctoral Thesis in accordance with current regulations of the University of Seville

Brief description of content:  Students participating in this research line will work in the development of "software" for the characterization of transmission lines, antennas or passive microwave circuits based on Maxwell's equations, as well as the application of commercial professional "software" to the design of such systems. Designed antennas and circuits will be fabricated and measured in the labs available at the Microwave Group. Are of special interest the analysis and design of printed board antennas (including miniaturized antennas, arrays of printed antennas, and "reflectarray" antennas), and microwave passive circuit made in printed board technology (microtira, coplanar guide, and combinations of both), such as power dividers, directional couplers, filters, "baluns", etc.
